Custom Categories are a way to easily filter your Explore searches even further.

Categories are saved boolean queries that can be applied as filters to narrow your results for analysis and comparison. Custom Categories can be used wherever filters are available, such as Keyword or Advanced Searches and Combined Searches. They are best set up as reusable categories that can be used with more general saved searches or for ad hoc search analysis.

This article will cover:

Creating a Custom Category

  1. Click Explore in the left-hand navigation bar

  2. Open a search

  3. Select the Custom Categories dropdown.

  4. Select Create Category

  5. Give your Category a name and enter your search term(s). Learn more about the Complete Boolean Library.

    1. If you would like your custom category to exclude unwanted results (i.e. a press release filter), be sure to toggle on Exclude matching results

  6. Give your Custom Category and name

  7. You can also add Custom Categories to a Label by selecting the Label drop-down

Note: You cannot create a new label in this view. You will need to already have labels created. Learn more about Using Labels in Explore.

  8. Click Save

Your new category will now appear in the Custom Categories drop-down menu.

Including a Custom Category in Your Search

To add a Custom Category to your search, follow these steps:

  1. Click Explore in the left-hand navigation bar

  2. Open a search

  3. Select the Custom Categories dropdown.

  4. Select the checkbox to the left of the Custom Category you want to add

  5. Click Search

Custom Categories can be used for deeper content analysis. For example, as a large conglomerate, Coca-Cola could use custom categories to compare their different product lines, such as Diet Coke versus Coke Zero. They may also want to use Custom Categories to segment their content based on different emotional responses, such as anger or excitement.

Note: All saved custom categories can be found under the Custom categories tab on the Explore homescreen as shown below. This quick access allows you to quickly edit category type from inclusion & exclusion and bulk options for deleting and labeling.
