Best Practices

While there are a number of customizations Meltwater offers in Image Editing, it is important to remember there is such thing as too much of a good thing!

We encourage you to play with each of the customization options, remember these important best practices when doing so:

  • Lighting: If you are taking the image yourself, take photos at ta time of day when the lighting is good to save time on editing. If the timing doesn’t work out, we recommend using the Adjust customization to make your image appear as though it was taken at the perfect time.

  • Crop and Straighten: Cropping can remove distracting elements and help viewers focus on the subject. Cropping can be done in the Transform customization.

  • Edit for the Right Dimensions: Make sure your images meet the dimensions for the social media channels you are posting on. This can also be done in the Transform tab as there are specific options to choose from for Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). Learn more about Channel-Specific Options.

  • Be Careful with Filters: Many people love using filters, believing they can enhance an image's appearance. While this is often true, it’s not always the case. Filters can either add a striking effect or completely ruin an image. In most cases, they strip away the natural look, making the image appear fake and unrealistic, which can come across as unprofessional to your audience. Take a look at the Filters tab to see if adding a filter makes sense for your image.

  • Add Text to Your Images: adding simple text to your image can help your audience connect with it and understand your message more clearly. Use the Text and Text Design tabs to add text to your image.
